Here is the confusing thing, stated up front: red pandas are more closely related to raccoons than they are to giant pandas. If you have ever squinted at a red panda and thought "that's a raccoon with a dye job," your instinct was better than the naming convention.
Three animals, three different families
The giant panda is a bear. Family Ursidae. It is closely related to the brown bear and the polar bear, and rather less closely to everything else on this page. It eats a diet that is around 99% bamboo using the digestive system of a carnivore, which is why it has to eat so much of it — an adult can get through 12 to 38 kilograms a day, largely because it absorbs so little of what it swallows.
The red panda is the only living member of its own family, Ailuridae. Everything else in that family is extinct. It has no close living relatives at all — but the branch it sits on, the superfamily Musteloidea, also contains weasels, skunks, otters and, yes, raccoons.
The raccoon is a procyonid, family Procyonidae, alongside coatis, kinkajous and ringtails. Also Musteloidea. Also, therefore, a distant cousin of the red panda.
So the ranking, from most to least related to a raccoon: red panda, then a considerable gap, then giant panda. The two animals sharing a name are the two that are least alike.
The red panda had the name first
This is the part that reframes everything. The red panda was described for Western science in 1825 by Frédéric Cuvier. The giant panda was not described until 1869, by the French missionary and naturalist Armand David.
For forty-four years, "panda" meant the small russet animal in the Himalayan understory. The giant panda was the newcomer, named by association because it also ate bamboo and also lived in the same broad part of the world. Then it became one of the most famous animals alive, took the name with it, and the original panda has been explaining itself ever since.
Where the word itself comes from is genuinely unsettled. The most commonly repeated derivation traces it to a Nepali term along the lines of nigalya ponya, understood as something like "bamboo eater" or "bamboo-footed" — but the etymology has never been nailed down, and you should treat any confident single-sentence answer with suspicion.
Both pandas grew a thumb, separately
Here is the detail that makes taxonomists happiest. Both the giant panda and the red panda have a false thumb — an enlarged wrist bone, the radial sesamoid, extended into a rough opposable digit that lets them grip a bamboo stalk.
They did not inherit this from a common ancestor. Their lineages split long before either of them took up bamboo. Each evolved the same solution independently, from the same spare bone, because bamboo presents the same mechanical problem to anything that wants to eat it. That is convergent evolution doing its best work: two unrelated animals arriving at the same strange wrist because the physics left them no other option.
How to actually tell them apart
In fairness to everyone: at a glance, in a photograph, the red panda and the raccoon are a genuine test.
- Colour. Red pandas are deep chestnut on top, near-black underneath, with a cream-white face. Raccoons are grizzled grey and brown throughout.
- The mask. The raccoon's is a solid black bandit stripe across the eyes. The red panda's face markings are white tear-tracks running down from the eyes — the opposite arrangement.
- The tail. Both are ringed, which is most of the problem. The red panda's is longer, thicker, and used as a blanket in cold weather.
- Where you are. A red panda lives in the temperate forests of the eastern Himalayas and southwestern China. If it is in your bin, it is not a red panda.
One more thing that is easy to miss: a 2020 genomic study argued that the red panda is not one species but two — the Himalayan red panda and the Chinese red panda, separated long enough to have diverged meaningfully. So the animal that has spent two centuries being confused with two other animals may in fact be two animals.
What any of this has to do with a t-shirt
Wrong Habitat is built on the premise that these animals were assigned their homes by a bureaucracy that made a small number of clerical errors and has never corrected them. The panda-and-raccoon pairing is the founding case: give the panda the city alley and the raccoon the bamboo forest, and see who copes.
