How Do Mountain Goats Climb Sheer Cliffs?

You have seen the photographs: a white shaggy animal standing on a ledge the width of a paperback, several hundred metres up a rock face with no visible route to it and no visible route off. It looks like a hoax. It is not a hoax.

The hooves are the whole story

A mountain goat's hoof is cloven — split into two toes — and both halves can spread apart independently. That alone widens the contact patch and lets the foot conform to an uneven edge instead of teetering on it.

But the real trick is the construction of each half. The outer rim is hard keratin, sharp enough to bite into a crack or a frozen seam. The inner pad is soft, rubbery and slightly textured, and it deforms into the rock to generate friction.

Hard edge for purchase, soft sole for grip. That is precisely the design of a climbing shoe: a stiff rand for standing on edges, sticky rubber for smearing on blank rock. The goat arrived at it first, by several million years.

Behind and above each hoof sit dewclaws — small vestigial-looking toes that catch on ledges during descent and act as brakes. Going down is harder than going up on steep ground, and the goat has dedicated hardware for it.

It climbs by pulling, not pushing

Most hoofed animals are built to run: power in the hindquarters, driving forward. A mountain goat is built the other way round. Its shoulders and forelegs are disproportionately muscular, giving it the ability to haul its body weight upward onto a ledge that its back legs could never launch it to.

Watch footage of one climbing and it reads less like a horse and more like a person on a via ferrata: reach, set, pull, step through. The centre of gravity stays low and close to the wall.

It is also not a goat

The mountain goat, Oreamnos americanus, is not a member of the genus Capra — which is where actual goats live. It sits in the goat-antelope group, and its nearest relatives are the chamois of the European Alps and the serows of Asia.

So the most famous climbing goat in North America is not a goat, in roughly the same way that the red panda is not a panda and the trash panda is not a panda either. The naming of animals is, on the whole, a shambles.

The octopus would win

Here is the part nobody in the Department wants to discuss.

An octopus has eight arms, each carrying a couple of hundred suckers, and each sucker is independently controllable. The suckers do not merely stick — they grip actively, conforming to irregular surfaces, and they are lined with chemical receptors, so the animal is tasting the rock as it holds it.

Roughly two-thirds of an octopus's neurons are distributed through its arms rather than its central brain. Each arm can assess a surface and act on it semi-autonomously. That is eight limbs solving the climbing problem in parallel, which is seven more than any climber has ever had.

And it has no skeleton. The only rigid part of an octopus is its beak, which means it can compress its entire body through any gap larger than that beak. A crack that would stop a goat is a doorway.

On a wet vertical face — the exact conditions that make rock hardest — an octopus is arguably better equipped than the animal that lives there. It cannot breathe, which remains a considerable obstacle. But on the climbing itself? The goat has watched this for some time and has not commented.
